Paris Air Show Faces Controversy Over Israeli Exhibitors

This week at the Paris Air Show, a prominent global arms fair, Israeli defense firms like Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and ELBIT Systems found themselves under significant scrutiny. Just before the event kicked off, organizers erected a black wall to obscure their displays, a move that sparked allegations of political maneuvering from Jerusalem.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense described how the Paris Air Show’s organizers had insisted that Israeli companies remove certain “offensive” weaponry from their exhibits. Some commentators suggested that France was attempting to gain an advantage for its own defense industry by sidelining competitors from Israel.

In defense of this action, the French Prime Minister stated that showcasing weapons at such events was inappropriate, especially in light of current humanitarian concerns related to Gaza. He articulated a clear stance, emphasizing that only defensive weapons would be showcased at the expo.

France has long positioned itself as a central hub in the global arms industry, and this recent episode is seen as part of a broader effort to limit Israeli participation in international exhibitions. In fact, back in May 2024, Israeli companies were barred from attending a significant defense fair called Eurosatory.

Moreover, attendees from Israel had been required to sign declarations stating they were not affiliated with Israeli defense manufacturers—an enforced rule later overturned by Paris courts but only after the exhibition had started, leaving limited opportunity for Israeli firms to participate.

Similar restrictions have reappeared for upcoming arms fairs, such as Euronabalu, where Israeli companies were allowed access but barred from constructing display stands. A government representative even suggested that promoting such arms would compromise France’s diplomatic efforts.

This ongoing tension comes amid President Emmanuel Macron’s call for an embargo on arms exports to Israel, emphasizing the need for diplomatic resolutions instead of military ones in Gaza.
