Israeli Navy and US 5th Fleet finish five-day joint exercise

The Israeli Defense Forces announced on Thursday that the Israeli Navy and the U.S. 5th Fleet have wrapped up a five-day joint exercise in the Mediterranean Sea, including areas like Haifa Bay and the Red Sea.

This exercise, referred to as “Essential Defender,” aimed to bolster the long-established collaboration between the two navies. It focused on enhancing responses to possible maritime threats and fostering joint operational learning, as stated by the IDF.

The IDF remarked that the exercise facilitated the integration of operational capabilities, introduced new technical skills, and broadened their operational choices.

A range of scenarios was covered during the training. They included sabotage and mine neutralization, addressing maritime incursions, diving and search operations, shipboarding tactics, and medical training.

In this session, a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, alongside an Israeli Navy Saar 5-class corvette, worked together to develop a unified assessment of air and sea situations.

The IDF underscored that ongoing exercises and patrols with the U.S. 5th Fleet in regions like the Red Sea emphasize the strategic alliance under U.S. Central Command, which plays a vital role in maritime security and stability throughout the Middle East.

Earlier in March, the Israeli Air Force and the U.S. Air Force had conducted joint training exercises over the Mediterranean for the first time in two years. During that exercise, Israeli F-35I and F-15I aircraft flew alongside American B-52 Stratofortress bombers.

This training occurred just three months before Israel engaged in a 12-day conflict against Iran, known as Operation Rising Lion, where U.S. B-2 bombers targeted Iranian nuclear facilities with notable success.
