Conflicting Accounts on Trump’s Involvement in Israeli Strikes
Officials from Israel and the United States have presented differing narratives about whether President Donald Trump was informed in time to prevent Israeli actions against Hamas operatives located in Qatar.
Several Israeli officials indicated to Axios that Trump had advance notice of the planned strikes and could have intervened if he had chosen to. Yet, Trump himself suggested otherwise in a statement, stating he was not adequately informed. According to those officials, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly discussed the operation with Trump directly, canceling the strike at the president’s request.
One source mentioned, “Trump was aware of the strike prior to the missile launch. There were discussions at the political level between Netanyahu and Trump, followed by conversations through military channels. Trump didn’t outright refuse the operation.”
While Trump’s explanation is not completely at odds with this recount, it implies that significant details about the timeline may have been omitted by officials. His remarks were first elaborated on during a White House press conference and later reiterated. He noted on social media that the administration was informed of the strike by the U.S. military.
“This was a decision made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, not mine… I quickly instructed Special Envoy Steve Witkov to inform the relevant parties about the impending attack, but it was unfortunately too late to prevent it,” Trump stated.
Netanyahu later affirmed the independent nature of the operation, describing it as “a completely independent Israeli operation.” He emphasized, “Israel initiated it, executed it, and carries full responsibility.”
There’s still some ambiguity regarding whether Netanyahu’s communication with Trump was merely to inform or if it was intended as a request for approval to proceed with attacks on U.S. allies. One Israeli official pointed out that the version presented by the White House was ultimately aligned with Jerusalem’s perspective due to the importance of U.S.-Israel relations.
Reports suggest that Netanyahu contacted Trump at 8 AM, just 51 minutes before the missile struck Doha at 8:51 AM. Trump acknowledged Israel’s reasoning while maintaining a critical distance from the operation itself.
He remarked, “Unsolicited bombing within Qatar, a close ally working courageously towards peace with us, will not serve either Israeli or U.S. interests. However, eliminating Hamas, who profits from the suffering of those in Gaza, is indeed a worthwhile aim.”
