Shooting in Sydney Sparks Outrage
Israeli officials have pointed fingers at the Australian government following a shooting in Sydney on Sunday, suggesting that authorities overlooked numerous warning signs related to anti-Semitism.
In light of the tragic incident that resulted in at least 11 fatalities and 29 injuries, Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar released notable statements. Herzog expressed frustration, stating, “We have repeatedly called on the Australian government to take action and combat the huge wave of anti-Semitism plaguing Australian society.” He shared a haunting image of a blood-stained prayer shawl to emphasize his message.
Saar echoed these sentiments, criticizing Australian officials for ignoring clear indications of increased Islamic extremism and anti-Semitic sentiments in the country.
“I am appalled by the brutal shooting at a Hanukkah event in Sydney, Australia,” Saar stated, linking it to the ongoing anti-Semitic incidents over the past couple of years. He mentioned a recent incendiary call to action that appeared to come to fruition with this attack. “The Australian government must come to its senses after receiving countless warning signs!” he exclaimed, also sharing the same image as Herzog.
According to police reports, at least two gunmen were involved in the attack during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a popular venue in Sydney. One attacker was killed, while the other is in the hospital. Authorities are investigating the potential involvement of a third gunman.
There are also claims from the police about finding multiple improvised explosive devices in a vehicle near the attack site.
The New South Wales Police Commissioner noted, “The Rescue Bomb Disposal Unit is currently on site working to respond to the incident.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the shooting and emphasized that targeting Jewish Australians is unacceptable.
