Thousands of mourners gathered at Jerusalem’s Mount Herzl Military Cemetery on Sunday to remember a fallen hero, Israeli police Inspector Arnon Zamora, who was killed during Saturday’s daring hostage rescue mission in Gaza.
Zamora led the Yamam Counterterrorism Unit in the successful rescue of four hostages – Noah Algamani, 25, Almog Meir Yan, 21, Andrey Kozlov, 27, and Shlomi Ziv, 40. He was the only casualty in the intense firefight.
Tributes and tributes poured in from across the country and the world, as hundreds of people lined the streets of the capital, waving Israeli flags and silently mourning Zamora’s funeral procession to Mount Herzl.
Farewell to a hero.
This is Israelis’ way of showing respect and gratitude to Captain Arnon Zmora, the special forces officer who died yesterday while rescuing four Israeli hostages from the heart of the Gaza Strip.

Zamora was buried with military honors in a coffin draped with the flag at a packed cemetery, where, as at many wartime burial sites, complete strangers often came to pay their respects to those who had died.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose brother was the only casualty in the successful hostage rescue mission at Entebbe, Uganda, in 1976, renamed the Gaza rescue mission “Operation Arnon”, just as the Entebbe raid was renamed “Operation Yonathan”.
A few years ago, a photo surfaced of Arnon Zamora, who served in the military, paying tribute to the fallen on Mount Herzl.
One day, you too will be happy. We love you.
