Israel's Olympic team calls off awards ceremony amid worldwide sports resistance

The Israeli Olympic Committee has decided to cancel its 2025 awards for athletes and coaches due to increasing global opposition and protests against Israeli sports teams, particularly in light of the ongoing Gaza conflict.

A statement regarding the cancellation was shared with Fox News Digital by the Israel Fencing Association, indicating that some prominent Israeli athletes, including Olympic medalists, may not be able to compete in significant international events. This, of course, complicates the selection process for both athletes and coaches in the upcoming year.

Last year, various Israeli national teams faced barriers to participation in international competitions. For example, the gymnastics team and Olympic gold medalist Artem Dolgopyat were denied visas to enter Indonesia for the World Gymnastics Championships. The Indonesian authorities cited security concerns as the reason, even when the Israel Gymnastics Federation confirmed the athletes had approval from their security team to participate.

Many, including gymnast Eyal Indig, have characterized Indonesia’s move as blatant discrimination based on nationality. He highlighted that the Israeli judo team faced a similar refusal of entry to Hungary for the World Judo Championships. Reports have emerged that judo medalists Inbal Ranil and Raz Hershko were also barred from competing at a time of heightened tension with Iran.

Additionally, logistical challenges arose for other Israeli teams; for instance, the fencing team had to travel by boat, which delayed their arrival for the European Championships. Various other teams missed out on participation in significant championships as well.

Compounding the issue, several governing bodies in countries like Ireland, Norway, and Turkey have urged the European football association to suspend the Israeli national team from competitions due to the violence in Gaza.

Even fans of Israeli teams have not been spared. Maccabi Tel Aviv fans were forbidden from attending a recent match in England against Aston Villa, primarily for safety reasons, following previous violence targeting their supporters during an earlier match in Amsterdam. At a protest near the stadium, around 200 demonstrators gathered, calling for peace while a few pro-Israel supporters also appeared.

Moreover, the Israeli cycling team, Israel Premier Tech, recently lost a major sponsor after adhering to the sponsor’s request to remove “Israel” from the team’s name. Canada’s Premier Tech announced the end of their partnership amid various challenges, including pressures from protests linked to pro-Palestinian sentiments.

It’s noted that organizers decided to remove the team from a race in Italy due to fears of similar protests that disrupted recent events in Spain during the Vuelta, where racing was frequently interrupted.
