On Monday’s “CNN Newsnight” broadcast, Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Steven Horsford (D-Nevada) said the issues surrounding President Joe Biden’s age are “about ageism, about ableism, not anything that the current president, President Biden, has done.”
After Horsford said he hadn’t heard any concerns from voters about Biden’s age, host Abby Phillips said, “[T]There are a lot of polls out there, but a recent one after the debates showed that over 70% of voters think President Biden is not up to the task of being president. 56% of Democrats say they would prefer there was a different candidate. I’m just saying that’s a concern that’s showing up in the numbers and affecting his approval ratings.”
Horsford responded, “What I find interesting is that this issue is about ageism and ableism, not anything that President Biden has done. Age didn’t stop him from lifting 50% of our children out of poverty. Age didn’t stop him from passing a bipartisan infrastructure bill. Age didn’t stop him from passing a bipartisan Safe Communities Act to protect our communities from gun violence. It’s his experience and his decency, because he really cares about the American people. Whereas Donald Trump only cares about himself and the big corporations and billionaires who want to cut their taxes. He’s now going to cost the American people $5 trillion with his new tax proposals. How are we going to pay for it? He’s going to go after the elderly, their Social Security, their Medicare. We can’t allow that. That’s the choice in this election.”
