It Is ‘Surrender’ to Deny Ukraine Pre-2014 Borders, But Don’t See Any Alternative

On HBO's “real-time” broadcast on Friday, host Bill Maher said that Defense Secretary Pete Hegses' declaration that it would be “just surrender” that it would be unrealistic for Ukraine to return to its pre-2014 border. But “I said the problem is I'm not here. I know it won't end like this.”

Maher said: “So, what Pete Hegses said by our Secretary of Defense… He said, returning to Ukraine's pre-2014 border is an unrealistic purpose, and for me it's just surrender. Again, we can debate whether it is true or not. The US also doesn't believe that Ukraine's NATO membership is realistic. And Trump says that Biden is the one who says that they are. When I told her I wanted to join NATO, I said that was when the trouble began. There are some truth to that.”

He continued. “On the other side of this, how will the war end? Did Ukraine defeat Russia without help from other countries? …I don't know, so I'm just putting it there. Here. It's very easy to sit and go through the principles. It's a principle. And someone on the ground has got a Kalashnikov rocket in their head. That's the problem. I don't know how to stop this way. Are they just realistic or cynical, or don't they care?”
