IT: Welcome to Delhi Episode 4 Recap

Episode 4 of IT: Welcome to Delhi might just showcase the most grotesque version of Pennywise yet. This week, the HBO series dove deep into the unsettling theme of eye-horror in a rather gruesome way.

**Spoilers Alert: IT: Welcome to Delhi Episode 4 is now streaming on HBO MAX**

Midway through the episode, Marge Truman, Lily Bainbridge’s (Clara Stack) bespectacled best friend, experiences a horrific nightmare when her eyes start protruding from her glasses like disembodied slugs. This bizarre twist triggers a chain of disastrous events that linger long after.

In a rather positive turn for the series, “Welcome to Derry” introduces a new “Losers Club,” coming together to confront Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård). Now, “Looney” Lily can count on Ronnie Grogan (Amanda Christine), Will Hanlon (Blake Cameron James), and Rich Santos (Arian S. Cartaya) as friends. They’ve all seen the horrors Lily has faced and believe her, allowing them to start hanging out at school and around Delhi.

However, Marge, who has been Lily’s only “friend” until now, isn’t too pleased. In this episode, she joins forces with the school’s meanest group, Patty Cakes, to make Lily’s life miserable. Marge tricks Lily into thinking a cute boy has a crush on her, but it’s all part of Patty Cakes’ plan to humiliate her, echoing themes reminiscent of Stephen King’s classic, Carrie.

Before she can confront the situation, Lily steps into the bathroom to collect her thoughts. Fearing she might bolt, Patty Cakes pushes Marge to follow her, but in a twist, Marge has a change of heart. Just as she attempts to reveal the truth, Pennywise strikes.

In the first episode, Marge was anxious about her new glasses making her eyes appear bigger. Now, her eyes are seemingly taking over her face. In distress, Marge bolts through the school hallways, desperately trying to detach the gigantic, moving eye from her face in the classroom.

When we caught up with the young star, Matilda Lawler, she shared her shock over Marge’s extreme decision. “No, I had the same reaction,” she laughed. “I was like, ‘Girl, please, please, please, no!’ But it was really fun to film.”

You may recognize Lawler from her work in Station Eleven or her charming role in The Gilded Age. During filming, she noted that some parts felt a bit silly. “I was wearing a half-head prosthesis, and there was a wire that popped out when I was running,” she explained. “So, there I was, screaming and crying with wires coming out of my eyes. I’m sure anyone passing by would have questions about my sanity.”

Despite the chaos, Lawler believes it was worth it. “I think it worked; I like the CGI, and it was exciting to see Clara appear at the end. We had a blast with the physical action, like blood splattering everywhere. The scene was intense, but I just remember having a ton of fun.”

Her dedication didn’t go unnoticed by her co-stars. Blake Cameron James remarked, “Tilly is probably more committed to the role than any child actress I’ve ever worked with, and honestly, even more than many adults. She truly gets into it and brings her A-game. It’s impressive.”

If there were any moments of genuine fear on set, it’s likely due to Matilda Lawler’s outstanding performance.
