It would be great to sign again with the Diamondbacks

Zac Gallen Open to Returning to Diamondbacks

Zac Gallen, one of the standout pitchers still on the free-agent market, is considering a reunion with the Diamondbacks. The 2023 All-Star expressed that it would be “great” to re-sign with the team, especially with spring training just around the corner.

At the WM Phoenix Open, Gallen shared his thoughts, saying, “It was scary.” He mentioned that talks over the past few weeks have included fans expressing their desire for him to come back. “People understand what Phoenix means to me,” he added.

His connection to the area runs deep—his wife is from there, and he now calls Phoenix home. It’s something he clearly values.

Gallen, who turned 30 recently, has emerged as Arizona’s ace after being acquired from the Marlins in 2019, but his previous season didn’t quite live up to expectations. He pitched a career-high of 192 innings, starting 33 games, but finished with a 13-15 record and a 4.83 ERA.

Despite struggling in various areas, he did perform better in the latter half of the season, posting a 3.32 ERA that tied his career average of 3.58. Yet, this was still very different from his standout 2022 season, where he went 12-4 with a 2.54 ERA and received All-Star honors.

Gallen faces an uncertain market this offseason, particularly after declining a $22.025 million qualifying offer from the Diamondbacks. This could complicate his potential signing, as it allows Arizona to collect a draft pick if Gallen signs elsewhere, which may deter other teams.

There are ongoing discussions about Gallen’s return, with interest reportedly coming from the Cubs, Padres, and Angels.

If Gallen remains with the Diamondbacks, it would mark a strong finish for an offseason where the team retained star infielder Ketel Marte while adding veteran hitters like Carlos Santana and Nolan Arenado.

Additionally, the team has also signed former Yankees relief pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga, bringing him together with right-hander Merrill Kelly. While former Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes is expected to make a comeback later in the 2026 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, the team’s future looks intriguing.

Even though last season didn’t end in postseason play for Arizona, Gallen emphasized the significance of the fan support. “It gives me chills to think that people still want you to come back and be a part of the organization and the franchise,” he noted.
