Italian Speedskaters Take Gold in Team Pursuit

Italian speed skaters clinched gold in the team pursuit event on Tuesday, besting Team USA, and Andrea Giovannini made sure to celebrate that victory in style.

Following the win, Giovannini skated around the rink, playfully taunting Stephen Curry by implying he should “go to bed.” This reference was a nod to Curry’s own antics during a memorable moment in a previous basketball match against France at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

“We had control on the last lap,” Giovannini stated. “I was just waiting to cross the finish line to channel my inner Steph.” He described the celebration as “a symbol of cold blood.”

Interestingly, Giovannini revealed that he had a plan for the celebration with his teammates days prior but had worried he might lose track of it in the heat of the moment.

The Italian team, which included Davide Ghiotto and Michele Malfatti alongside Giovannini, delivered a stunning performance, completing the race in 3 minutes 39.20 seconds.

Meanwhile, Team USA, comprising Ethan Seplan, Casey Dawson, and Emery Lehman, finished in a time of 3:43.71, securing the silver medal. They had previously set a world record during a race in Salt Lake City with a time of 3 minutes 32.49 seconds.

This silver medal marks the second Olympic medal for Seplan, who had also secured a silver with Joey Mattia at the Beijing 2022 Olympics.
