World leaders sent condolences to the family of Corey Comperartore, a Pennsylvania volunteer firefighter who was killed Saturday while trying to protect his wife and daughter from gunfire at a rally for former President Donald Trump.
“Corey Comperatore just turned 50, a former fire chief and Italian-American from Calabria. He died as a hero, shielding his wife and daughter from the bullets unleashed by a gunman during a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said in a post on X.
Comperatore, 50, a former Buffalo Township fire chief, was shot and killed by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who opened fire on Trump from a gun position about 130 yards away during a campaign event, according to the department.
Authorities said a Secret Service agent shot and killed Crooks seconds after he fired the first shot, but not before he killed Comperatore and wounded two other bystanders.

“Without a moment’s thought, and instinctively, Corey sacrificed his own life to save the lives of those he loved. An act of love and extreme altruism that must be respected.[sic]”Once again, my deepest condolences to his entire family. Rest in peace, Corey,” Meloni continued.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called President Trump, who was shot in the ear during an assassination attempt, on Sunday to express support for those who were killed, according to the Associated Press.
