Italy’s New Measures Targeting Muslim Attire and Foreign Students

The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, is implementing measures aimed at reducing the influence of Muslim immigrants in Italy.

Due to its geographical position, Italy has seen an influx of millions of immigrants, particularly from Muslim-majority countries, as many migrants use boats to cross the Mediterranean.

During a party youth gathering on Sunday, Meloni announced plans to prohibit burqas in schools while also imposing restrictions on the number of foreign students permitted in each classroom.

“In Italy, it’s crucial that students attend school with their faces visible,” Meloni insisted. “No one, under the guise of tradition—whether real or imagined—can dictate that a young woman must conceal herself.”

She mentioned that a proposal will soon be presented to the Cabinet aimed at legally capping the number of foreign students allowed in classrooms. Additionally, parents of foreign students who encounter significant challenges in adapting to the school system will be required to learn Italian, and the wearing of burqas and niqabs in schools will be banned.

Research indicates that around 12% of students in Italy are non-citizens. Meloni argued that when foreign students are too numerous in a class, it hampers their ability to integrate effectively.

“When there’s only one child who doesn’t speak Italian in a class, they’re likely to pick up the language quickly with help from classmates,” she explained. “But if a large number or even a majority of students don’t understand the language, we can no longer call that integration; it’s neglect.”

Having been elected four years ago, Meloni’s campaign was largely propelled by Italians seeking stricter measures against illegal immigration. She has maintained these policies in the face of criticism from opposition parties.

Meloni has not specified what the exact limit on foreign students would be.

Responses from public figures, such as BlazeTV host Steve Deace, indicate support for Meloni’s proposed actions, suggesting that her political rhetoric is finally being reflected in concrete policies.

Italy’s immigrant population has surged from about 423,000 in 1985 to approximately 5.8 million projected for 2024.
