Italy's Olympic hockey rink criticized for tiny jumbotron while NHL oversees building progress

NHL Officials Optimistic Despite Concerns Over Olympic Arena

NHL and NHLPA officials express optimism regarding the ongoing construction of the Santa Giulia Ice Hockey Arena in Italy, which is meant for the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics. However, social media users continue to mock the progress of the rink as anticipation for the games builds.

This will be the league’s first participation in the Winter Olympics in over ten years, yet criticism over the arena’s construction raises doubts. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly highlighted that players would not go to Italy if safety issues were present at the rink, which has become a point of concern in recent weeks.

Despite these apprehensions, officials felt satisfied after a recent test event held at the venue. Still, complaints persist, with many fans joking about the rink’s small jumbotron. One social media post humorously remarked, “Instead of a jumbotron, they chose the iPad.” Another quipped that the arena’s jumbotron resembled a “modified iPad Mini” hanging from the ceiling, intended for watching highlights.

Mr. Daly had previously mentioned that he was “cautiously optimistic” that the rink would be ready in time. Recently, updates from inside the rink showed the jumbotron, which some criticized as lacking the expected size for a venue of this significance. One comment noted, “It’s not a Jumbotron, it’s just a Tron,” while another user lamented, “What is this, a jumbotron for ants!?”

Still, the NHL and NHLPA shared a statement about the test event, labeling it a “good trial run” that provided useful insights into the current construction status. They acknowledged that much work remains to be done before the Olympics begin on February 5th.

The statement emphasized, “New ice and a stadium under construction will present challenges, but we expect the work necessary to address any remaining issues to continue around the clock.” They assured that both organizations would keep a close watch on developments, ready to advise local organizing committees and other relevant bodies to ensure the best conditions for players.
