Italy's victory against Mexico qualifies Team USA for the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals

Team USA Advances Thanks to Italy’s Victory Over Mexico

With a recent win against Mexico, Team USA is feeling relieved, and they might just owe a thank-you to Italy for knocking Mexico out of contention in the World Baseball Classic.

Italy secured a 9-1 victory at Daikin Park, finishing Pool B with a perfect 4-0 record and earning a spot in the quarterfinals. Despite Team USA’s surprise 8-6 loss to a talented squad the night before, Italy’s success has kept American hopes alive.

Going into this critical matchup, Team USA found themselves rooting for Italy—one of the tournament’s underdog stories. The team has brought a sense of enjoyment, complete with exciting home run celebrations. This was especially evident during Tuesday’s game, where both veteran players and promising prospects showcased their skills on the field.

Vinny Pasquantino, captain of the Kansas City Royals, notably struggled initially, going hitless through three games. However, he turned things around in a big way for Italy, becoming a standout player by hitting three solo home runs during this crucial game. This made him the first player in World Baseball Classic history to achieve such a feat in a single outing.

He kicked off the scoring in the second inning with a 342-foot shot to right field and added another home run in the sixth. Finally, in the eighth inning, he completed his hat trick with one more impressive home run.

In addition to Pasquantino’s performance, John Berti also contributed. He capitalized on the Crawford box in left field with a solo homer in the fourth inning, helping to extend Italy’s lead.

On the mound, Aaron Nola, a seasoned pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, showcased his talent by allowing only four hits over five innings and striking out five. Nola’s skill kept Mexico at bay.

As Mexico struggled to make gains, they faced a tough situation in the seventh inning with loaded bases and no outs. Unfortunately for them, they only managed to score one run after a series of outs, failing to capitalize on what could have been a game-changing moment.

Pascantino’s third home run proved pivotal, solidifying Italy’s momentum and driving them toward victory. With Italy moving on to the quarterfinals, Mexico’s journey is over as the players transition back to their major league teams for spring training.

Looking ahead, Team USA is set to face off against Team Canada, the winner of Pool A, on March 13 at 8:00 pm ET at Daikin Park.
