‘It’s Common Sense’ to Oppose Trans Athletes in Women’s Sports

Sports broadcasting legend Bob Costas has spoken out against transgender athletes playing in women’s sports, saying it is “common sense” to speak out against them.

Appearing on HBO Real Time with Bill Maher Costas said on February 9 that it would be “insane” to allow male-born trans boxers to box with naturally-born women.

Costas pointed out that the various professional sports governing bodies are all separate organizations and each can make their own rules. But he added, “When it comes to Olympic boxing, it’s my understanding that the federation will allow trans women to compete against biological women, biological women at birth. That’s crazy. It seems like it is.”

Costas continued: “It’s not transphobia to say, ‘Let’s inject some common sense here.'” Much of this is vague. Some people who take issue with this actually have animosity towards transgender people and people who at some point in their lives, after careful consideration, have decided to be happier and closer to their true selves. We know there are people out there. I think any sensitive person would agree with that. ”

Mr. Costas then got into specifics and explained his position. “But Sugar Ray Leonard didn’t fight Mike Tyson,” he said before explaining why.

“They were contemporaries,” Kostas continued. “Sugar Ray was a welterweight, Mike was a heavyweight, right? If one day the best player in the WNBA could play in the NBA, everyone would applaud. But on the end of the bench on the worst team in the NBA. If the baddest guy in the world goes to the WNBA and averages 40 points a game, we all know that’s bullshit.”

Mr. Maher also atlantic Caitlin Flanagan, who appeared on the show, agreed with Costas that there are extreme physical differences between men and women and that it would be unfair to allow transgender athletes to compete as naturally-born women. .

“Women’s sports and women’s sports weren’t created separate from men’s sports and men’s sports because of some weird gender thing like you have to wear pink or you have to wear blue. There’s something deep about it. It will become.” [physical] Gender differences between men and women. That’s why,” she explained. “You don’t hear about trans male athletes on D1 basketball teams…It’s trans women who seem to be taking advantage of the natural advantages that come from traits associated with gender.”
