‘It’s Hard to Believe’: Jon Stewart Criticizes Democrats for Ending Government Shutdown

Jon Stewart Critiques Senate Democrats on Government Shutdown Bill

On Monday, Jon Stewart, the host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” voiced his dissatisfaction with Senate Democrats after they passed a bill aimed at concluding the longest government shutdown in history.

The U.S. Senate approved a revised continuing resolution that would keep the government running until January 30, 2026. This bill also includes full-year funding for key departments such as Agriculture, Veterans Affairs, and military construction. During the show, Stewart mentioned that the episode was sponsored by “Unbelievable!”

“And what is ‘it’?” he mused, referring to the Democratic Party. “You remember the Democrats? They shut down the government last month for ‘special reasons.’

Stewart showcased a montage of Democrats advocating for an extension of enhanced Obamacare subsidies from the pandemic, featuring Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. The segment also included Fox News host Dana Perino, who stated that the Democrats had “succumbed.”

He expressed his disbelief: “Excuse me, ‘Are you thinking about a shutdown?’ Huh? Not the sort of strong, youthful Democrats that wear cerulean blue blazers and hang out by the river. ‘And I say…not at all.’ No, they caved to the shutdown,” Stewart exclaimed. He pointed out that just a week after a significant election victory, seven Democratic senators teamed up with Republicans to end the shutdown. “And did they secure the extended health care benefits?” he questioned.

Stewart then played a clip from an ABC News report, which revealed that Republicans had agreed to discuss a bill for enhanced subsidies later on.

“I can’t believe it! The wind is blowing! We won elections all across the country. Sidney Sweeney’s new movie is a hit!” he shouted. “Apparently, her new MAGA fan base didn’t come flocking to see a film about a lesbian prizefighter overcoming domestic violence. Who would have thought? Democrats, you just conceded the shutdown, not to achieve your goals but for the promise of not getting what you wanted later.”

He referenced Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War,” encouraging a different approach to strategy: “‘Never impose your advantage. It’s ugly! Fighting is tough. How about some snacks?'” Stewart remarked, incredulous. “What good is a promise for a Senate vote, guys? Democrats, you don’t even control the Senate. Do you realize how this works? Let’s say you managed to secure a vote in the Senate, something you haven’t achieved all year. What happens then?”

Chuck Schumer faced criticism from progressive media figures and fellow Democrats over his choice to support a Republican-backed spending bill to avert a government shutdown in March.
