Trump Announces Military Action Against Iran

On Saturday evening, President Donald Trump stated that the United States would target three Iranian nuclear facilities and scheduled a national address for 10 PM Eastern. He urged Iran to pursue peace negotiations.

The previous Thursday, the White House had conveyed that Trump decided to extend negotiations with Iran for another two weeks, hoping that Iran would agree to cease its nuclear enrichment in return for ending hostilities.

Before Saturday, the US had not directly participated in military actions involving Israel, although it had provided them with weaponry, shared intelligence, and repositioned naval and aerial assets in the region.

Iran reacted defiantly, refusing to engage in discussions regarding its nuclear program amidst the military actions.

House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed support for Trump’s decision, indicating it sent a significant message.

Support also came from leaders of the Senate and House Intelligence Committees, who backed Trump’s actions.

Trump communicated to Israeli journalist Barack Ravid, insisting that Israel is now safer following the airstrike.

In Israel, the initial response seemed positive, with many citizens unaware of the events, as the strike was announced at around 3 AM local time. There were no immediate updates on the strike’s impact.

An Israeli-American speaking to Israeli Army Radio from the US expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you to God for voting for Donald Trump!” He noted unity among Trump supporters regarding the military actions.

Polls indicated a general American approval for missile strikes against Iranian nuclear sites, although not for deploying ground troops.

According to the same polling data, while there was opposition among Democrats to the US involvement and Israel’s military actions, some, like Senator John Fetterman, voiced their support for Trump’s decisions.

Updated 9:15 PM ET: Unconfirmed reports suggested that the US used up to 30 “bunkerbuster” bombs during the operations. These are known for their ability to penetrate hardened underground facilities, with the GBU-57, a deep penetration bomb, being notably effective. The B-2 bomber can carry two of these bombs simultaneously. Concerns remain over whether Iran’s fortified nuclear facility at Fordow can withstand such hits.

Social media reflected a mix of astonishment and defiance from the Iranian regime and its backers.

9:20 PM ET: Reports indicated that six “bunkerbuster” bombs were deployed at Fordow, with Tomahawk missiles aimed at Natanz and Isfahan.

Iranian state media have been issuing threats against US military installations in the Middle East.
