Criticism Grows for Hubert Davis After North Carolina’s Loss

Adam Shine seems to have launched the first critique regarding the head coach Hubert Davis. The North Carolina men’s basketball team, seeded sixth, faced a disappointing 82-78 defeat to No. 11 VCU on Thursday.

On his show, “Shine Time,” aired Friday, Shine voiced serious doubts about Davis’s job security. He expressed, “I don’t want to hear that Hubert Davis is secure in his position. This is an A-plus program with a C-minus head coach. And I’ve liked Hubert Davis as a Knick! I enjoyed him on ESPN, too! He was great as an assistant to Roy Williams. But what’s happening here? The results simply aren’t there!”

Davis has had his struggles, with his teams being knocked out in the first round of the last two March Madness tournaments. However, he did manage a notable 29-10 record in his first season, which surpassed the expectations set by the long-term coach Roy Williams, who led for 18 seasons. Notably, the Tar Heels reached the national championship but lost 72-69 to Kansas State in the 2021-22 season.

Interestingly, Davis holds the unique distinction of being the only coach in UNC history to win at least 20 games in each of his first four seasons.

After the game against VCU, Davis’s failure to address the loss during a postgame press conference left Shine with sharp criticism: “Hubert Davis didn’t have answers. He couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag,” he remarked.

The circumstances surrounding the team’s performance raise serious questions. The Tar Heels had a significant lead at 70-56 with just over seven minutes left, only to lose in what seems to be a perplexing outcome for a program once regarded as a powerhouse.

Shine further commented on North Carolina’s diminished status: “You have a prominent program and a strong NIL situation. You should be leveraging that to attract top talent, build your roster, and maintain a solid reputation—like the Jordan Brand connection. So, why isn’t North Carolina securing one of the elite coaches out there?”

In his view, “North Carolina basketball is potentially more coveted than many NBA positions. We simply cannot keep Hubert Davis at the helm any longer. This feels amateurish!”

Davis, once a familiar face as the 20th pick in the 1992 NBA Draft for North Carolina State, played four seasons with the New York Knicks. Though he remains the head coach at UNC, the uncertainty surrounding his position continues to escalate following the recent critiques.
