The Rangers' core has been largely entrenched since the first week of January 2020, when Igor Shesterkin was promoted from the AHL. The team responded to head coach David Quinn's call and struggled through the winter before the league shut down due to COVID-19. But the bubble tournament happened, and the following season the team decided Quinn had become too demanding, so the Rangers stopped responding, and the coach, team president John Davidson, and general manager Jeff Gorton were all fired.
