Yankees’ Catcher Faces Challenges in Strike Framing
Toronto – Yankees catcher JC Escarra is known for his impressive ability to steal strikes and frame pitches effectively. Nonetheless, during a 12-5 loss to the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, this skill had a downside that was very evident.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, with runners on first and second, Luke Weaver believed he had secured a third strike against Addison Burger. However, when the pinch hitter checked his swing on a full count, his bat made contact with Escarra’s glove. The Blue Jays were quick to challenge, leading to a bases-loaded situation that resulted in a five-run rally.
“He wasn’t going to swing, but I should have been more careful,” Escarra reflected. “Moving forward, I need to prioritize not getting too deep into these situations.”
Starting in the second consecutive game, Escarra was filling in for Austin Wells, who is recovering from an invasive procedure related to poor circulation in his finger. He stepped up to the plate, trying to catch pitches before they went too far inside.
Despite his skills, there are times when his methods can unintentionally obstruct swings. This situation was the third instance this season where it has cost the team, putting him in a tie for the league’s lead in such errors.
“I’m really focused on reducing those instances whenever I can,” said manager Aaron Boone. “It’s important for us to know which players are vulnerable and which ones aren’t, and we apply that to our catchers, too. We’re trying to maximize our use of the strike zone.”
Even so, the Yankees faced challenges with check swings. It’s not that the pitches were incorrect, but the contact with Escarra’s gloves led to awarding a base rather than a strikeout. Boone suggested that there should be more attention on how check swings can affect the game negatively.
Weaver described the experience as “confusing.”
“Honestly, it’s quite upsetting,” Weaver commented. “It’s a tough aspect of our game, and I don’t really think it has a place in it. Sure, there are challenging moments, and sometimes a batter makes solid contact, but to feel like you just had something taken from you—it’s out of my control at that point.”
