Concerns Surrounding JJ McCarthy’s Status for Week 13
JJ McCarthy’s status for Week 13 is uncertain after a challenging performance on Sunday. Head coach Kevin O’Connell mentioned on Monday that McCarthy reported being in concussion protocol. This came after he felt symptoms during the flight back to Minnesota following a tough 23-6 loss to Green Bay, as noted by ESPN.
Backing him up is undrafted rookie Max Brosmer, who stepped in after veteran Carson Wentz underwent season-ending shoulder surgery earlier this fall.
It’s been a rollercoaster season for the Vikings’ quarterbacks. They turned to McCarthy after the departure of former Jets QB Sam Darnold, who had a successful run and then signed with the Seahawks in free agency.
McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 Draft, didn’t play last season due to a meniscus tear he sustained in preseason. Unfortunately, his struggles continued, and the recent heavy defeat against Green Bay has raised more eyebrows.
In that game, McCarthy completed only 12 of 19 passes for a mere 87 yards, with no touchdowns and two interceptions. He was also sacked five times, contributing to the Vikings’ disappointing record of 4-7.
After the game, McCarthy expressed the need for improvement. “We’ve got to be better. There are a lot of things we have to do better,” he said.
If he’s unable to play this Sunday, which, interestingly, features a matchup against Darnold in Seattle, it would mark the second time this season that McCarthy has missed time due to injury. Earlier, he dealt with a high ankle sprain in Week 2, which kept him out for five games and allowed Wentz to take over responsibilities.
In the games he has played, McCarthy has thrown six touchdowns compared to ten interceptions over six outings, completing about 54.1% of his passes. Kickoff for Sunday’s game is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
