JJ Watt Becomes CBS’ Top NFL Analyst

JJ Watt shared his enthusiasm about being named CBS’ top NFL analyst, mentioning it wasn’t quite what he anticipated.

The former NFL player is stepping in for Tony Romo, who was arrested on drunk driving charges in July. This shift marks a significant change in the network’s football coverage.

According to CBS’ announcement from last month, Watt will join iconic broadcasters Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.

In a recent post on X, Watt conveyed his feelings about this transition, acknowledging the unusual context surrounding it.

“I’m not saying much because it’s not the situation you’d like, but I’m really excited about this opportunity and look forward to working with the legendary team,” he said. “See you in Minnesota!” He also shared a glimpse of his notes for the upcoming Packers-Vikings game in Week 1.

At 37, Watt joins CBS for the 2023 season after retiring from the NFL, taking over for Charles Davis and partnering with play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle on the network’s second broadcast team.

Romo, currently on administrative leave following his arrest, faces an uncertain future with CBS. Sports President David Berson stated that there are “no plans” for Romo’s return.

Berson mentioned, “The situation is evolving and we are still evaluating it. There is no schedule or final decision at this time.”

Romo’s arrest occurred in Wisconsin on July 23, leading to charges of driving under the influence, a violation in that state. He is set to pay a fine of $1,568.50.
