Milan-Cortina Games: JT Miller’s Olympic Journey

MILAN — For JT Miller, like many athletes at the Milan-Cortina Games, the Olympics weren’t always a childhood dream. Growing up in East Palestine, Ohio, he found himself more captivated by the X Games, which featured events like skateboarding and skiing, than by Olympic competitions.

It wasn’t until he joined the U.S. national team at 16 in 2009 that the idea of representing his country at the Olympics started to take shape. Now, seventeen years later, the 32-year-old is proudly wearing the red, white, and blue in Italy. Team USA’s general manager, Bill Guerin, chose to keep Miller on the roster after his strong performance in last February’s four-nation tournament, where the team finished as runners-up.

Guerin had numerous talented players to consider in the NHL but ultimately prioritized continuity and team chemistry, which spoke to Miller’s value as a player.

“Honestly, I get a similar feeling when I’m playing my game,” Miller shared after a practice session. “I may not have a huge role, but I enjoy being involved in the penalty kill, taking faceoffs, and focusing on defense while building momentum.” He mentions wanting to play a “heavy game” that he’s familiar with, emphasizing a responsible two-way style. “I just want to bring good energy,” he added, “to be myself.”

From what was observed during Wednesday’s practice, Miller looked poised for his Olympic debut against Latvia. Positioned on the fourth line, he shared the right wing with Jack Hughes and rotated between Brock Nelson and Vincent Trocheck at center. The Rangers’ captain is also expected to play a critical role on Team USA’s penalty kill.

As he prepares for the competition at Santa Giulia Arena, Miller expresses gratitude for the chance to share this experience with his family. “It’s not really about me—it’s more about the kids,” he reflected. They’re reaching an age where these memories truly matter. He and his wife have been together for a long time, and experiencing this milestone together is significant for both of them. He also acknowledges his parents’ sacrifices over the years. “We really don’t take this for granted,” he concluded. “It means the world to us.”
