J.T. Miller laments the missed power-play opportunities by the Rangers in the third period

COLUMBUS, Ohio

After a tough 1-0 overtime loss to the Blue Jackets, J.T. Miller brought up the power play situation without anyone asking. The Rangers, facing a lack of offensive support, managed to get a point thanks to Dylan Garand’s efforts in goal.

During the third period, they had three power-play chances and a significant six-minute period to change the game in their favor. For a while now, the power play has been a strong point for this team. Adding Pavel Dorofeyev, who netted 20 goals on the man advantage last season, raised expectations even higher.

However, on this particular night, the Rangers could not capitalize, bringing their season conversion rate down to only 20 percent. Miller expressed his frustration about these missed chances. “It sucks the power play can’t come up with one in the third,” he said. “You get three cracks in the third. You got to help the team right there. We could’ve used one.”

Coach Mike Sullivan echoed Miller’s sentiments, suggesting that they really needed to score during those opportunities.

The Rangers could only generate four scoring chances across their power plays and have now gone just 1-for-11 since the beginning of their game against the Lightning on Tuesday. This was disappointing, especially because they performed well on the penalty kill, successfully stopping all three of the Blue Jackets’ power-play attempts, including one that rolled over into overtime as a 4-on-3 situation.

In fact, the Rangers’ penalty-kill unit currently ranks second in the league with a remarkable 93.5 percent success rate.

But the power play was meant to be a real strength. “I don’t think we got in as clean,” Miller reflected. “We didn’t come up with the contested pucks in the corners. I felt like they did. … It wasn’t our best, and we all know that with three power plays in the third period and a scoreless game on the road, we have to step up.”

Meanwhile, Taylor Raddysh, who played 7:43 with the fourth line after being called up from AHL Hartford, shared that it was “obviously frustrating” to be waived at the end of training camp.
