Ciatarelli Plans Legal Action Against Sherrill for Defamation
Jack Ciatarelli, a candidate for governor in New Jersey, announced on Thursday that he plans to sue Rep. Mikie Sherrill for defamation. This comes after Sherrill claimed in a debate on Wednesday that Ciatarelli personally “murdered tens of thousands of people.”
During the debate, Sherrill criticized Ciatarelli’s medical publishing business, arguing that his companies contributed to addiction and subsequent deaths in New Jersey by promoting content from opioid manufacturers.
On Thursday, Sherrill reiterated this accusation, stating in an interview with USA Today that calling Ciatarelli a murderer didn’t seem far-fetched to her.
Ciatarelli’s campaign strategist, Chris Russell, responded strongly, saying, “Mikie Sherrill’s baselessly and recklessly accusing political opponents of mass murder during a televised debate crosses a red line.” He emphasized that such statements are not only defamatory but have shocked the public and media alike.
Sherrill, in her defense, claimed her remarks were justified, insisting that it wasn’t an exaggeration to highlight the impact of misinformation from opioid companies. She urged the U.S. Attorney’s Office to take action against drug traffickers while continuing to call attention to overprescribing practices.
The debate became heated when Ciatarelli accused Sherrill of hypocrisy, pointing out her past support for Charlie Kirk while later denouncing him as a racist and misogynist.
Sherrill responded sharply, accusing Ciatarelli of having a negative impact on many lives in New Jersey, including children.
Fact-checking platforms have confirmed that there is no evidence to support Sherrill’s claims about Ciatarelli causing any deaths. Instead of offering an apology, Sherrill’s team has redirected the conversation to accuse Ciatarelli of avoiding accountability by pursuing legal action.
As the gubernatorial race heats up, it’s a tight contest, being one of only two such races in the U.S. this year. Polls indicate that Ciatarelli narrowly lost to Gov. Phil Murphy in 2021, and the current race has shown similarly close results. Voter turnout is expected to be critical, with efforts underway to encourage Republican registration in the state.
Ciatarelli is focusing his campaign efforts in traditionally Democratic strongholds, recently gaining support from local Democratic officials, which adds an interesting twist to the ongoing political landscape in New Jersey.
