Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula: A Dynamic Duo at the US Open
Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula might not have exchanged many words before their collaboration in this week’s US Open mixed doubles tournament, but they already have that vibe, you know, like an “old married couple.”
After advancing to the semi-finals by defeating Emma Raducanu, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Mirra Andreeva, the duo spoke with reporters about their experience on the court.
Draper, when asked about the meaning of their victory, replied, “It would mean a lot.” He added, “It’s a bit of a display format. But hey, it’s nice playing alongside someone.”
Then a lighthearted moment unfolded as Pegula teased him for calling their match an “exhibition.” “You shouldn’t say that,” she joked, but with a smile, letting him know it was all in good fun.
Draper seemed a little taken aback at first, thinking he was the one who misinterpreted the situation. “Yeah, I get it,” he said. He rambled a bit about how it’s not really an exhibition, expressing that it’s a good chance to, well, score some points and perform well.
Pegula chuckled, assuring him that she was just being playful about the “exhibition” comment. It felt relaxed, like they were already in sync despite this being their first time teaming up.
As the conversation turned more expressive, they both shared a laugh, with Pegula stating, “No, it’s fine. I’m just laughing at the ‘exhibition’ part.”
The friendly banter continued, and their chemistry was evident. When asked about their connection, Pegula smiled, remarking, “That was a great answer.” They had certainly played like a well-coordinated team, winning their initial match 4-2, 4-2, and then quickly sending their quarter-final opponents home with a decisive 4-1, 4-1.
Now, they’re gearing up to face third-seeded Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in the semi-finals this coming Wednesday. It’ll be interesting to see how their camaraderie affects their performance in that matchup.
