MILAN — Jack Hughes displayed intense focus during a U.S. power play.
The Devils’ standout player had already netted his second goal of the tournament earlier but was eager for more. He called for the puck again, and it ricocheted off the boards straight to him, pushing Team USA ahead with a five-point margin as they triumphed 6-2 against Slovakia in the semifinals of the 2026 Olympics.
When questioned about his recovery from the numerous injuries he’s faced in the NHL lately, Hughes couldn’t help but smile. “I’ve been feeling this way back all these years,” he noted. “I don’t know, I’ve had a lot of injuries, but I’m a hockey player. I think I played well. I know not everyone watches the Devils every night, but I love where I’m at and I’ve always believed in myself. I know what kind of player I am.”
With three goals and three assists over six games, Hughes has taken on more responsibility with the U.S. national team. Initially positioned on the fourth line alongside Brock Nelson and JT Miller, he was later promoted to the left wing of the third unit behind Dylan Larkin and Tage Thompson. Team USA’s head coach, Mike Sullivan, explained that this was intended to give Hughes more ice time, enhancing his influence on the field.
2026 Winter Olympics
Hughes’ performance has been a sharp contrast to his earlier struggles in the 4 Nations tournament, where he managed just a single assist across four matches. He seemed to fade into the background during that physically demanding competition. However, his presence has certainly been felt since arriving in Milan.
“Yeah, I mean he’s an elite player,” said his younger brother, Quinn, reflecting on Friday’s match. “Whenever he’s healthy, I feel like he’s one of the best players in the world. Sometimes he doesn’t get enough credit for that. People forget how great of a player he is. I’m really happy he was able to show it in this tournament. He’s very tough and competitive, and he’s embraced any role.”
“In the second period, we had the power play, we had the penalty kill; he didn’t play that much, but I think he came out and scored and was ready to go no matter what. That just proves where his mentality is right now.”
