Special Counsel Jack Smith has officially resigned from the Justice Department.

Smith resigned from his position on Friday, according to court filings.

“The special counsel completed his work on January 7, 2025, filed his final confidential report, and separated from the department on January 10,” the agency wrote in court documents filed in Florida on Saturday. .

Smith resigned as special counsel after submitting his final report to attorney Merrick Garland.

The embattled prosecutor oversaw the two prosecutions of President-elect Donald Trump, so his resignation is not a shock to many.
