Jack Smith: Trump prosecutions were not driven by politics

Jack Smith Defends Indictment of Trump as Non-Political

Former special counsel Jack Smith has stated that the indictment of President Donald Trump is not politically driven, despite widespread speculation to the contrary.

In a recent interview in London, published on Tuesday, Smith dismissed claims of political bias in the case as “ridiculous.”

“The idea that politics would play any role in a major case like this is completely absurd and completely contrary to my experience as a prosecutor,” he remarked.

Smith elaborated on his decision to pursue charges against Trump after Special Counsel Robert Hur opted not to take action against former President Joe Biden for retaining documents in his garage. He pointed out that a key difference lies in the element of “obstruction.”

He asserted that there is substantial evidence indicating Trump deliberately retained classified documents.

“To prove illegal possession of a classified document, you have to show that the defendant knowingly possessed the document. That means the defendant was aware that what he was doing was wrong,” Smith noted, emphasizing that “there is a lot of evidence of intent” in Trump’s case.

In contrast, President Trump has claimed that Smith’s investigation and prosecution pose a threat to the nation, even characterizing them as criminal actions.

This discussion arises as Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has called Smith to testify regarding potential abuses in the justice system.

Smith insisted once again that the indictment of Trump was not politically motivated, labeling such notions as “ridiculous.” In response, Trump labeled Smith’s actions as “criminal” and the worst form of political opposition.
