Jackson Hospital reaches deal with Blue Cross Blue Shield

Jackson Hospital Reaches Agreement with Blue Cross Blue Shield

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Jackson Hospital announced via social media on Friday that it has secured an agreement with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, which will allow the financially challenged hospital to continue operating. The hospital had been seeking increased reimbursement rates from insurance providers to improve its financial situation.

While the court system had not mandated higher reimbursement rates, it appears that a voluntary agreement has emerged. Specifics of the agreement have not yet been disclosed by either organization.

The only information available so far comes from Montgomery County Commission Chairman Doug Singleton. He stated that the agreement relies on the city and county expressing their support for Jackson Hospital.

“Today’s agreement between Blue Cross Blue Shield and Jackson Healthcare is dependent on the city and county signing a letter of support,” Singleton mentioned. “I hope this gets discussed in the City Council, and I know it will be raised at Tuesday’s County Commission meeting. This support letter signifies that as a county, city, and state, we are committed to backing Jackson Hospital.”

The hospital has already received significant funding from local and state sources.

Although many details of the deal remain unclear, it might involve increased reimbursement payments from Blue Cross Blue Shield to Jackson Hospital.

The hospital has consistently emphasized, both publicly and in federal court, that achieving a better reimbursement agreement is crucial for its short-term and long-term sustainability.

In a brief message to the community on Facebook, the hospital expressed relief over the agreement.

Saving the hospital means the continuation of jobs for 1,800 employees and access to care for tens of thousands of patients. Closure would likely have worsened crowding and waiting times at other medical facilities.

WSFA 12 News reached out to Jackson Hospital following the announcement.

“We wanted to share this news with our staff today so they can stop worrying and enjoy their weekend. We will be issuing a press release and holding a press conference next week when we sign the contract.”

WSFA 12 News also contacted Blue Cross Blue Shield regarding the agreement.

“Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama is delighted that Jackson Hospital will remain open and continue to serve the Montgomery community and River Region. Blue Cross has been collaborating with hospital leaders and other stakeholders to keep the hospital operational and ensure patients have access to necessary care. Throughout this process, we have focused on supporting our members and the community. We appreciate everyone’s efforts in achieving this outcome and look forward to further collaboration for the health and well-being of our customers, the River Region, and the people of Alabama.”

This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates.
