Jacoby Brissett is expected to play in the Patriots' season opener against the Bengals.
Despite rookie quarterback Drake Maye's strong play on Sunday, Brissett told WEEI on Tuesday that he considers himself QB1 in New England's depth chart.
“In my eyes, I [starting Week 1]”I haven't heard anything different, so that's my go-to,” Brissett said.
Brissett, in his second stint with the Patriots, played just one drive in the team's preseason finale on Sunday because of a shoulder injury but insisted he was “100 percent OK.”
“I'm fine,” Brissett said of his shoulder. “I think it was just kind of a precaution… I'm fine. I hadn't had a shot in eight months so it surprised me more than anything. I'm feeling good, I'm excited and I'm ready for the season.”
Brissett was projected to be the starter throughout the preseason, but may have lost his spot to Meyer, the No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft, who had another strong game against the Commanders, throwing for 126 yards and a touchdown.
Patriots head coach Jerrod Mayo suggested the rookie's performance could lead to even more competition for the team's quarterback spot.
“I'm going to say it's a real competition … and I'm going to say Drake is ahead of Jacoby at this point,” Mayo said. Monday on WEEI's “The Greg Hill Show”“With that being said, we need to go back through the spring to the beginning of training camp and look at all the work we've done and then we'll see where it ends up. But that's a conversation we'll have here over the next few days.”
Meanwhile, the 31-year-old Brissett hasn't been as impressive, completing just 5 of 14 passes for 36 yards and one interception in three preseason games.
