Cowboys Sign Jadeveon Clowney for Pass Rush Support
While he might not completely replace Micah Parsons, the Cowboys are making strides in their pass rush lineup.
Dallas has officially signed Jadeveon Clowney, a three-time Pro Bowler, as confirmed by owner Jerry Jones after their 40-37 win against the Giants on Sunday.
Clowney, who played 14 games for the Panthers last season, initially checked out the Jets before deciding on a contract with Carolina. He was the top pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and had been without a team since his release by the Panthers in May.
“He’s an outstanding player and he’s going to provide us with some much-needed depth,” Jones mentioned during a press conference. “He’s reliable and will help our team, which is crucial as we strategize our roster.” According to sources, Jones emphasized that this move aligns with their overall roster management philosophy.
This acquisition might help fill the gap left by Parsons, who was unexpectedly traded to the Packers just before the regular season. The trade brought Kenny Clark and two first-round picks to Dallas.
In light of this recent deal, Jones labeled it as a significant improvement for the Cowboys. He noted that their run defense has been lacking in the past, adding that Clark’s capabilities will address those issues.
In Green Bay, Parsons has already notched 1½ sacks and four quarterback hits in two games. In contrast, the Cowboys managed just a single sack during their opening game against the Eagles and only managed to drop Russell Wilson on Sunday.
Alas, while Wilson threw for over 450 yards and three touchdowns, Dallas had to depend on Brandon Aubrey’s long field goals to secure their win.
Clowney has accumulated a total of 58 sacks throughout his illustrious 11-season career, which included time with the Texans, Seahawks, Titans, Browns, Ravens, and the Panthers.
Last season, he recorded 5½ sacks in Carolina and 9½ sacks during his time in Baltimore.
If Clowney is on the field for week three, he will likely be tasked with pressuring quarterback Caleb Williams, particularly important as the Cowboys prepare to face the Packers and Parsons in Dallas the following week.
