Record Transfer for Jaedyn Shaw
The dollar figure stands out.
On Thursday, Gotham FC revealed Jaedyn Shaw as their newest acquisition, officially paying a record-breaking $1.25 million to bring the 20-year-old offensive midfielder from North Carolina Courage.
“When clubs invest in me, it shows they recognize my potential and value, which I truly appreciate,” Shaw remarked. “I want to ensure I’m living up to that.”
This move is just one part of a larger trend where multi-million dollar transfers are becoming more common, especially overseas. We’ve seen players like Naomi Girma and Alyssa Thompson head to Chelsea, while Olivia Smith moved to Arsenal, and Lisbeth Oval joined Orlando Pride.
“The fee will be spread out over installments, making this Gotham’s first-ever seven-figure deal. It broke the previous record for player transfers within the NWSL,” the announcement noted.
Gotham’s head coach, Juan Carlos Amoros, stated that this substantial deal reflects ownership’s ambition to remain at the forefront of the evolving landscape of women’s soccer.
“I’m incredibly thankful for this opportunity, and it’s thrilling to be part of such significant achievements,” Shaw expressed. “But really, what matters is how I translate that onto the field.”
Shaw launched her professional career with San Diego Wave at just 17 in 2022 and made her US Women’s National Team debut the following year. She played a part in the team that won gold at last summer’s Olympics and has netted eight goals in 26 appearances for the USWNT. However, her performance this year has been somewhat of a struggle, managing only three goals and one assist in ten starts with Courage, which led her to be excluded from Emma Hayes’ recent USWNT roster.
Shaw described the move to Gotham as “an opportunity to advance in my career, in an amazing city that has a fantastic community, breaking barriers and competing in remarkable tournaments.”
Amoros was careful in discussing Shaw’s future role, given the abundance of midfield and offensive players already at Gotham, and he hesitated to confirm whether she would play in the upcoming match against San Diego Wave.
In an official statement, Gotham mentioned that they are also working on a “renewal and extension” contract with Shaw, which sources suggest could keep her with the club through the 2029 season.
Gotham’s general manager, Yael Averbuch West, indicated earlier this summer that the team acknowledges they need to improve their roster for greater competitiveness. “We’re always looking to enhance our lineup,” she noted, adding that the club aims to secure its players for future growth.
Currently, Gotham is on a two-game winning streak in the NWSL, remaining unbeaten in five consecutive matches across all competitions, trailing just slightly in points from the top four.
