Jaguar Land Rover Expands Vehicle Recall
Jaguar Land Rover has extended a recall to include an additional 23,677 vehicles due to a potential electronic system issue that could result in loss of drive power and problems with exterior lighting, according to federal regulators.
The recall encompasses various models, specifically the 2021-2024 Land Rover Range Rover Velar, 2019-2024 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, 2020-2024 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, 2020-2024 Land Rover Range Rover, along with the 2021-2024 Jaguar F-Pace, 2021-2024 Jaguar E-Pace, 2020-2024 Land Rover Discovery Sport, 2021-2024 Land Rover Discovery, and 2020-2024 Land Rover Defender.
This action was taken because the DC-DC converter may fail due to an electrical overload that could occur during periods of high power consumption, as noted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
A software malfunction might also prevent the converter from operating at startup, which can lead to loss of both drive power and exterior lighting. According to the notice, “Failure of the DC-DC converter will result in the loss of 12-Volt system charging and can lead to complete loss of drive power and exterior lighting.”
Jaguar Land Rover believes that all the vehicles listed are impacted by this issue.
The vehicles involved utilize a high-voltage battery in conjunction with a traditional 12-volt battery that powers various systems like lights and electronic accessories. The DC-DC converter is responsible for recharging the 12-volt battery from the high-voltage system.
As reported, Jaguar Land Rover has received 393 claims and field reports regarding this issue in the U.S., according to the NHTSA.
Fortunately, there have been no reported accidents, injuries, or fires linked to this defect. Dealerships will perform software updates at no cost, which will include a new “limp-home” mode that alerts drivers if the DC-DC converter stops functioning.
Interim letters informing owners about the safety issue are set to be mailed out on November 13. Further communication will follow once the final solution is available.
