Jaguars strengthen offense by acquiring Tim Patrick from the Lions shortly after roster cuts

The Jaguars are enhancing their receiving corps by bringing in quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s new target, veteran Tim Patrick.

On Wednesday, Jacksonville finalized a trade with the Lions for Patrick, just a day after the roster was trimmed down to 53 players, as reported by ESPN.

At 6 feet 5, Patrick, 31, adds significant height to the Jaguars’ lineup, offering Lawrence a more substantial option in the receiving game.

The team is already home to second-year standout Brian Thomas Jr. who stands at 6 feet 2, along with dual-threat, Heisman winner Travis Hunter, who is 6 feet 1.

Jacksonville had previously sought to acquire Devarn Bere from the Broncos, but he ended up being traded to the Saints for future draft picks instead.

Patrick has faced challenges recently, having missed both the 2022 and 2023 seasons due to injuries, but he managed to record 33 catches for 394 yards and three touchdowns during his last healthy season.

Prior to his injuries, he consistently performed well with the Broncos from 2018 to 2021, amassing over 700 receiving yards in each of the 2020 and 2021 seasons and a total of 11 touchdowns in that span.

In his career, Patrick has accumulated 176 catches, 2,403 receiving yards, and 15 touchdowns.

This trade also benefits the Lions by boosting their draft capital while reallocating their receiving depth, potentially allowing rookie Isaac Teslaa to step up as a third receiver.

Detroit has traded multiple third-round picks to acquire Teslaa, who showed promise during preseason with 10 catches for 146 yards and three touchdowns.

“You notice his acceleration and smooth stride,” said Lions general manager Brad Holmes about Teslaa. “He’s adept at catching with his hands and can contribute on special teams.”

With a change in coaching, as former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson moves to the Bears, the Lions are set to implement a new offensive strategy this season.

The Lions will kick off their season on September 7th against rivals Green Bay, while the Jaguars will host the Panthers.
