Detroit Lions’ Offense Shines Brightly This Season

The Detroit Lions’ offense is not just good this season; it’s exceptional. Sitting at the top of the NFL in points scored, and ranked 5th in total offensive yards, they’re led by Jared Goff, who is having an impressive year as the league’s top passer. Alongside him, the team boasts one of the top three running backs and three receivers who are noteworthy in their own right, all ranking within the league’s top 30. Sure, Goff is getting a lot of deserved recognition, but it’s Jahmyr Gibbs who is really turning heads. He’s not just having a noteworthy season; he’s breaking records that put him among some of the game’s greatest legends.

This past Sunday, Gibbs scored his 7th touchdown of the season, his second of the game, bringing his career total to an impressive 58 total touchdowns—remarkable for someone who’s only five games into his fourth season. This milestone, notably, broke the previous NFL record set by the legendary Barry Sanders, marking Gibbs as the all-time leading touchdown scorer for players under 25 years old.

What’s perhaps even more intriguing is that Gibbs still has some time before he turns 25—he won’t reach that milestone until March of 2027. This means he has 12 more regular-season games to keep adding to his impressive stats and possibly make the record seem unbeatable. To put it into perspective, no player has surpassed 50 total touchdowns before turning 25 since Todd Gurley did it in 2018, and prior to that, it was Maurice Jones-Drew back in 2009. It feels like we only see a player with these capabilities every decade, and right now, it’s Gibbs’ moment to shine.

If he continues at his current pace, Gibbs could end the season with approximately 1,714 rushing yards, 826 receiving yards, and a staggering 31 total touchdowns. If he accomplishes this, he’ll be compared to LaDainian Tomlinson’s groundbreaking 2006 season when he tallied 28 rushing touchdowns. What Gibbs is achieving this year even surpasses Christian McCaffrey’s best all-purpose season in 2018, where he amassed 2,392 yards from scrimmage and 19 touchdowns.

While Gibbs is certainly stealing the spotlight, it’s also important to recognize how incredible the entire 2023 running back class has become. This year has not only gifted us some of the top running backs in the NFL, but there are also hidden gems from deeper in the draft who are really making an impact on their respective teams.

The NFL is currently experiencing a resurgence among running backs, and these four athletes are helping to shape this new era. Leading the pack are Bijan Robinson and Jaymyr Gibbs, both of whom are ready to claim their place as the league’s most versatile all-purpose backs. It’s exciting for fans who appreciate hard-hitting football, and it seems quite clear that the potential for their careers is limitless.
