BYU Quarterback Jake Retzlaff Withdraws from Football Program
Jake Retzlaff, a quarterback for BYU, has officially stepped away from the football program. This decision signals the beginning of his transition to another school. Retzlaff shared on social media that this choice was not an easy one. He indicated that after much prayer, reflection, and discussion with trusted individuals, he felt it was time to withdraw from both the university and its football team.
In an Instagram post, he expressed gratitude toward his teammates, coaches, and fans, emphasizing how much BYU has meant to him. For Retzlaff, it was more than just a football experience; it was about personal growth. He mentioned that BYU helped him evolve mentally and physically.
Retzlaff’s decision follows a turbulent period, which included being involved in a sexual assault lawsuit that was later dismissed. It has been reported that he might not enter the NCAA transfer portal, but instead could directly enroll in another institution.
Earlier in June, reports suggested that Retzlaff was looking to play at a different school in 2025. At that time, he had already informed his coach and teammates about his plans to leave. Despite being close to graduation, there’s some uncertainty about his next steps, though he may qualify as a graduate student.
His situation also drew attention after he faced repercussions for violating the honor code at the church-run university, acknowledging a consensual relationship as part of his legal defense. Last season, he had a noteworthy performance, amassing 2,947 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions as the Cougars aimed for a place in the Big 12 Championship game.
BYU’s head coach, Kalani Sitake, chose not to discuss Retzlaff’s circumstances during recent media engagements, labeling it a private matter.
