Jake Tapper questions Hakeem Jeffries about Medicaid support for non-citizens

Debate Over Medicaid Funding for Non-Citizens

CNN’s Jake Tupper engaged House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) in a discussion on Wednesday about Medicaid funding concerning non-citizens. This came as Democrats accused Republicans of attempting to undermine healthcare access.

Tupper brought up the topic of extending Obamacare grants following a government shutdown that occurred on the same day. He mentioned that Republicans claim the situation amounts to providing health insurance for undocumented immigrants, a portrayal he acknowledged isn’t entirely accurate. “That’s a lie,” Jeffries responded swiftly.

Jeffries continued, emphasizing that Democrats are focusing on reimbursing emergency Medicaid hospitals. He argued that care is also extended to asylum seekers and individuals with temporary protected status—people who, he pointed out, aren’t illegal under federal law. Tupper probed further on this point, stating, “You’re discussing grants, but what about non-citizens?”

Jeffries reiterated that the Democrats are working hard to protect healthcare for around 14 million Americans. “But won’t these provisions for non-citizens muddy the waters of your message?” Tupper countered.

Jeffries clarified that the issue pertains to state emergency care provisions, which are governed by state law, while insisting that federal laws restrict the alterations they can make at the state level.

Other Democrats have also dismissed Republican claims that they are facilitating medical services for illegal immigrants. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) expressed similar sentiments during an appearance on MSNBC.
