Jake Tapper Acknowledges Past Coverage of Biden
Jake Tapper, a host on CNN, has expressed some humility over his previous reporting on Joe Biden, though the release of his new book alongside Axios reporter Alex Thompson has attracted criticism.
During a conversation with CNN, Tapper admitted, “I think some of the criticisms are fair.” He reflected on his past coverage of Biden, suggesting he might not have reported thoroughly enough on certain issues. “I’ve covered some of these topics, but not enough. I’ll look back at it humbly,” he added.
The book, titled “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Cover-up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again,” was launched on Tuesday. Tapper stated that he plans to thoroughly address Biden’s health issues, acknowledging that conservative critics have previously challenged the administration’s transparency on these matters.
Looking back at 2020, Tapper recalled a critical exchange with Lara Trump, noting, “She was right, and I was wrong,” expressing a desire to be more accountable in his reporting.
Biden’s Media Coverage Scrutinized
Tapper indicated that he and Thompson aim for a thorough examination of Biden’s presidency, particularly around health concerns. “I barely scratched the surface on this,” he remarked. In a separate interview, he claimed conservative media outlets often highlighted these issues more than mainstream news outlets did.
Comedian Jon Stewart took a jab at CNN’s coverage, questioning why news networks don’t provide complete transparency about key facts. “Doesn’t news need to tell you what people know when they find it?” he asked, criticizing the network for its mixed messages surrounding the book’s promotion.
Charlamagne Tha God, a radio host known for his liberal stance, also expressed skepticism toward Tapper, stating he looks forward to reading the book yet critiqued CNN’s approach to Biden’s campaign strategies. He implied that the network might avoid harsh truths regarding Biden.
On “The View,” co-host Joy Behar criticized CNN for its promotion of the book, suggesting that it raises questions about when similar scandals regarding Trump would be addressed. Co-host Sunny Hostin pointed out that Trump officials profited from books about his administration, amplifying calls for balanced scrutiny.
MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski pressed both authors during an appearance on “Morning Joe,” voicing her perspective on Biden’s presidency and questioning claims of a media cover-up. Tapper and Thompson defended their stance but faced tough questions about the narratives they proposed.
Authors Under Fire
Critics of Tapper have emerged, claiming that there’s an attempt to rewrite his history in response to the book. Journalist Mark Halperin raised concerns about the directions taken by CNN during Biden’s term, calling for accountability across media platforms.
Tapper highlighted that numerous sources, including some high-ranking Democrats, were hesitating to speak candidly about Biden’s situations until after the 2024 election, suggesting a broader issue with openness in reporting.
In the midst of all this, the discussion surrounding this book reflects deeper conversations about media responsibilities and the dynamics of political coverage today.
