The Knicks' unwinning record against the NBA's top three teams felt like a first world problem when compared to skid teams that were kicked out in the first round of the playoffs last spring.
Following the latest contraction losses to Cleveland and Boston at the Eastern Conference Powerhouse over the weekend, the Knicks had everything they could handle with the 76ers rolling up before drawing out a Sloppy 110-105 victory in the yard on Wednesday night.
“Yeah, we needed it. I'm glad we got the victory,” said Jalen Brunson, who rescued the Knicks with 11 of the 34 points at the final 3:39. “But we still had a lot to do.”
The Sixth, who was All-Star Center Joel Embiid for everything but 19 games this season, crashed from the top 10 playoff position in the East with nine consecutive losses.
But you wouldn't have known that by watching the second half of Wednesday.
Karl Anthony Towns (knee) sits with the Knicks, with rookie center Ariel Fuk Porti getting his first nod in his NBA career.
Hukporti contributed eight points and two rebounds in 16 minutes, but he left the game in the fourth quarter with a left knee injury.
Mikal Bridges netted 19 of his 28 with the Knicks (38-20) in the first quarter, with Josh Hart grabbing 17 rebounds, but committed seven of the team's 16 turnovers.
“We were just not focused and we were pretty careless about the ball,” Branson said. “It's all good. We just have to respond. We can't uk about it.
“I think we responded in a way that would help us get a victory. It's not ideal, but obviously that's not what we want. But it's a victory and we're moving forward.”
Tyreese Maxey led the Six with 30 points despite being 0 days of 10 nights from the 3-point range, with Kelly Ubre having 27 and Paul George adding 25.
The Bridges came in just 20 points in their previous 10 appearances, but he hit his first six shots, nailing a total of 19 in any quarter of the season.
Branson also issued all seven assists in the opening session. This includes feed to Fukuporti for a dunk for the Knicks first point in the game.
Cam Payne found a valuable achihua for another, and Fukulti rolled into the rim for his second slam in his half as the Knicks extended their lead to 18 midway through to a 61-45 lead at halftime.
“[Bridges] Tom Thibodeau said. “Obviously you haven't replaced them individually with guys like Kat…and I thought it was the way Mikal played and his aggression at the start of the game was huge.
“And then we searched him and started to find benefits for him. It was a good team play and Mikal was great.”
Bridge did not add to the scoring totals over the period, but Branson finished half with 15, including 8-8 on the free throw line.
Hukporti transferred an offensive rebound early in the third, but he caused a leg and then soon saw his left knee on the Knicks trainer.
Maxey scored the team's final 10 points, including two free throws in the final moment, shaving the deficit 83-74 into the final period.
George's midrange jumper closed the gap for the fourth six seconds in 60 seconds.
The bridge and OG Anunoby buckets returned to double digits with 9:19 left, with the Knicks leading 94-85 mid-quarter.
Justin Edwards' three pointer and Rob Dunk by Andre Drummond pulled the Six within one, while two free throws by Maxey played in under four minutes.
Branson's two free throws pulled the Knicks before draining a 3-pointer with a 105-102 lead at 1:22.
“That's what he always does,” Bridges said of Branson. “We were able to score such a point, especially in the fourth time, which helped us win the game.”
Achiuwa then rejected the tall Drummond on the rim with the rest of the 34.1 ticks, and Anunoby was freed for an inbound dunk to maintain the victory.
