The Eagles kicked off their new season in a rather chaotic fashion—before they even had a chance to make a defensive play.
It all started with an injury to a Philadelphia trainer right after the opening kickoff. In a surprising turn of events, defensive lineman Jalen Carter approached Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and seemed to get a bit too close for comfort, appearing to spit on him.
Carter received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and was ejected merely six seconds into the game. Eagles Chief Security Officer Dom “Big Dom” had to escort him off the field, and the NBC commentators couldn’t hide their disbelief over how this game began.
“Oops, oh oh,” said NBC’s Mike Tirico, visibly puzzled. “First off, I can’t quite grasp his thoughts, and secondly, this is a critical moment for the game.”
Analyst Chris Collinsworth added, “Jalen Carter is, like, their top defensive player. He’s a huge part of their strategy. To take him out—well, that’s a big deal for Philadelphia.”
As a rookie, Carter was already making waves, having been the ninth overall pick in 2023 and earning a Pro Bowl selection last year with impressive stats—4.5 sacks and 42 tackles.
But now, he’ll have to sit out and only wait for his chance to contribute to the team’s defense in 2025.
The sequence of chaotic events began with Eagles fullback Ben Vance Mellen injuring his knee during the kickoff. It was reported that he glanced toward the trainer before Carter made his way over to the group of Dallas players, where something was exchanged with Prescott.
The specifics of their exchange remain unclear. What is evident, however, is that Carter’s actions led to significant implications for the game. As for the first quarter, both the Cowboys and Eagles managed to find the end zone during their initial possessions, ending the quarter tied.
