Jalen Carter will not play in the Eagles-Giants game partly because of the MetLife Stadium field conditions.

Jalen Carter’s choice to skip Thursday’s game against the Giants was reportedly influenced by the turf at MetLife Stadium.

According to Ian Rapoport from NFL Network, he had “understood” that Carter’s absence from the NFC East matchup was “partly because of the turf at MetLife.” This follows a heel injury Carter sustained prior to the game, which had placed him on the Eagles’ injury report as a limited participant on Wednesday.

The Eagles’ defense was already dealing with shoulder injuries this season, and now Carter’s heel issue only complicates matters. He made the trip to New Jersey but opted out of pregame warmups.

Before heading to the locker room, he was spotted on the field, chatting with his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, as well as head coach Nick Sirianni and general manager Howie Roseman.

There’s been ongoing conversation—and concern—regarding the safety of the turf at MetLife Stadium. Many have observed that players have suffered serious injuries on it over the years, leading to criticism of the playing surface.

Even though players have been vocal about their worries, NFL injury data ironically suggests that MetLife’s turf is actually safer than many assume. For instance, the old turf—which faced its fair share of backlash—was set to be replaced in 2023. Interestingly, it was ranked ninth for lower extremity injuries in 2024, making it one of the safer fields for visiting athletes.

Odell Beckham Jr., a former Giants receiver, recently expressed his frustration over the turf on social media, especially after a teammate suffered a significant injury. He pointed out that while it’s not solely the turf’s fault, the need for quality assurance in playing surfaces is critical. “Can we at least start a discussion?” he urged.
