Jalen Hurts' mother addresses frightening blood clot issue

On Monday night, Pamela Hurts, the mother of Jalen Hurts, shared an uplifting message shortly after her son’s season was cut short due to multiple blood clots in his lungs.

In a TikTok video, she encouraged viewers to “be grateful” for their current situations, reminding them that life can change unexpectedly. “What are you grateful for?” she asked, blending her message with an intimate setting as she walked around her home.

The Hurts family is understandably shaken as they navigate this serious health issue affecting the Super Bowl-winning quarterback.

Initially, Hurts was diagnosed with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis, which is a blood clot in the calf, after consulting with specialists in London ahead of the Week 5 game against the Jaguars. He had undergone an ultrasound before the loss in London, according to a statement from his team and agent, Nicole Lynn.

Despite only getting about seven and a half hours of sleep due to a hospital visit, he played in the 19-17 loss to Jacksonville.

Further testing showed that he actually has deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, a more severe condition involving clots in the lungs.

According to ESPN, Hurts is looking at a recovery period of at least three months, which might allow him back in time for the playoffs, if all goes well.

The team’s statement noted that he is stable and has no serious functional limitations, with treatment focused on anticoagulation, or blood thinners. It was mentioned that he would be kept away from contact sports during his recovery but could still stay active with the team and condition during this time. The prognosis appears positive, with expectations of no long-term effects.

Last Thursday, the Eagles were the first to indicate the gravity of Hurts’ condition by announcing he would miss the following game against the Panthers due to the blood clot. Hurts had previously sought treatment after claiming he was cleated during a loss to the Rams on October 4.

After a follow-up ultrasound the previous Wednesday showed movement in the clot, the team ruled him out for Sunday’s game.

He was later placed on injured reserve, meaning he must sit out a minimum of four games.

Reflecting on the experience last week, Hurts described it as “very unique” and opted not to delve into the specifics of what led to his condition.

With Hurts sidelined, the Eagles turned to Tanner McKee but suffered a 25-14 defeat to the Panthers, falling to a 2-4 record and tying for second place in the NFC East with the Cowboys, trailing the Giants.

Since taking over as the starting quarterback late in the 2020 season, Hurts has been a reliable leader, starting over 15 games each season, including leading the team to two Super Bowl appearances, culminating in a victory in Super Bowl 2025 against the Chiefs.

The Eagles’ next game is against the Cowboys on “Monday Night Football” in Week 7, a matchup that could significantly influence both teams’ seasons.
