NFL Suspends Ja’Marr Chase for Spitting Incident
The NFL has handed down a one-game suspension to Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase for spitting on Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey during their Week 11 game.
Chase has denied the accusation, claiming he did not spit at Ramsey, who was ejected for throwing a punch in the fourth quarter. However, video footage seems to tell a different story, prompting the league’s disciplinary action.
This suspension means Chase will forfeit his weekly salary of $448,333 and a game bonus of $58,823, as reported by ESPN.
The NFL stated that Chase violated Rule 12, Article 1, Section 3, which addresses conduct that goes against the principles of good sportsmanship.
The incident occurred late in the game when Chase and Ramsey were face-to-face. Initially, observers were puzzled when Ramsey grabbed Chase’s mask and threw a punch, resulting in his ejection. The earlier verbal exchanges between the two were typical of heated divisional rivalries.
Post-game, Ramsey claimed Chase not only spat at him but also threw punches. In response, Chase asserted he never spoke to Ramsey, though video evidence may contradict his claims.
Reactions to Chase’s actions have been largely critical, with voices from various sports circles chiming in. Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson criticized him harshly on social media, describing spitting as a behavior that leaves a lasting mark and questioning Chase’s upbringing.
Reports indicate that Chase intends to appeal the suspension, which adds another layer to what’s already been a tumultuous season for him.
The Bengals, who are struggling with three consecutive losses, now find themselves at a disappointing 3-7 record. Chase, who has been a standout this season with 79 catches for 861 yards and five touchdowns, will be absent when they face the in-form New England Patriots in Week 12.
