Jameis Winston’s Role in the Giants
Jameis Winston may not have stepped onto the field in the first ten games of the season, but it’s clear he still influenced the Giants in various ways.
This is his first year with the team, and despite being a third-string quarterback, his contribution went beyond what you’d expect. His interactions in small groups and one-on-one conversations with teammates showcased his influence.
While Winston is known for his laid-back and fun personality, he also carries an expectation of accountability that resonates with his peers. It’s interesting how someone who doesn’t play can still shape the team culture in such a positive way.
Winston expressed his dedication, saying, “At your service. I serve every day to the best of my ability.” This sense of duty will take on a new meaning when he hits the regular-season field for the first time with the Giants.
With rookie Jackson Dart currently in concussion protocol, interim coach Mike Kafka made a notable decision to promote Winston to the starting quarterback position, demoting reserve Russell Wilson.
The upcoming game against the Packers at MetLife Stadium is his moment to shine.
“In times like this, you just act,” Winston said. “Who’s going to focus on being the solution? Who’s going to focus on doing everything they can to be the solution for this team? I take it one day at a time, one play at a time, and I encourage everyone else to do their best. That’s what the fans want—effort and execution. If we do that, we’ll be tough to beat.”
Meanwhile, Kayvon Thibodeau will be absent due to a shoulder injury, leading to increased playing time for rookie Abdul Carter. Although he started just one game, Carter has been solid, averaging nearly 48 snaps per game, with one half-sack and eight quarterback hits. Fans are hopeful the third overall draft pick will step up significantly soon.
This week might hold some personal stakes for guard John Runyan Jr., who left the Packers after the 2024 season. He signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Giants. “Yeah, you can say that,” he noted. “It’s my first time playing against them. I enjoyed my four years there, and while they wanted me back, the Giants were more committed. I’m glad to be here.”
Lastly, this game presents another chance for Dexter Lawrence to shine, especially against backup centers. The Packers will be missing Elgton Jenkins due to an ankle injury, so Sean Ryan, who has started all 17 games in 2024 and four this season, will get the nod at guard.
