Jane Fonda Advocates for First Amendment Committee Reboot

Actress and activist Jane Fonda recently expressed that Democratic leaders aren’t doing enough during her appearance on CNN. She was promoting a revival of a committee dedicated to the First Amendment.

This committee was first formed in the 1940s by entertainment industry figures as a response to the Hollywood blacklist during the McCarthy era. Fonda, whose father, Henry Fonda, was part of this movement, shared her hopes with CNN’s Dana Bash about reigniting a sense of unity, particularly in response to former President Donald Trump.

“We’ve never fully mobilized our military strength in democratic cities across the nation,” Fonda commented. She noted that, as far as she is aware, the President hasn’t attempted to exert control over the Federal Reserve. “He’s accumulating power in ways that undermine our democracy, and we aim to push back,” she added. “We are creative and we tell stories.”

Later, Fonda mentioned that her revitalized group is quickly growing and is also focusing on electing a new Democratic leader. “We’ve got a great team, and we genuinely enjoy working together,” she remarked. Additionally, she emphasized her commitment to a climate-focused group dedicated to electing leaders nationwide, expressing dissatisfaction with current political actions. “If you can’t change people, then you change the people in power,” she said.

Fonda pointed out the significance of fighting against what she termed the “power of repression” within the federal government and the “coordinated campaign to silence critics.”

In a statement from her committee, she highlighted the strength of unity among supporters and the importance of defending freedom of speech and expression. “This isn’t merely a partisan issue; we encourage all Americans who value the arts and artists to stand with us,” Fonda declared. “We see those who exploit our work while threatening the livelihoods of everyday people—history will remember.”
