Stelson Defeats Douglas, Challenges Perry in Pennsylvania Race

In a significant election, Democrat Janelle Stelson, a former anchor from the NBC affiliate in Lancaster, has emerged victorious against Dauphin County Commissioner Justin Douglas. This sets her up to challenge Republican Scott Perry, a prominent member of the Freedom Caucus, who has found himself in a precarious position in the House.

Perry, hailing from Dillsburg, has consistently taken conservative stances and even chaired the Freedom Caucus in 2022. He narrowly secured his seat in a tight race against Stelson in 2024, winning by just a few thousand votes.

Notably, Stelson faced criticism for reportedly keeping his residence within U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker’s district while campaigning in Perry’s area, which largely overlaps with the former news station’s coverage zone.

As of 2025, reports indicate that Stelson has relocated to a rental home in East Pennsboro Township, situated across the Susquehanna River.

Douglas also voiced concerns regarding Stelson’s campaign, particularly highlighting the absence of a preliminary debate.

Interestingly, Stelson was registered as a Republican for many years before shifting his party affiliation during the Trump administration. He has gained support from Governor Josh Shapiro, who acknowledged that Stelson has distinct viewpoints from some within the party.

During an interview, Stelson discussed his criticisms of President Joe Biden, particularly regarding border issues. He noted that he believes Trump’s response to the chaos was indeed substantial.

Adding complexity to her position, Stelson mentioned supporting Trump’s tariff repeal while also identifying as pro-choice. It’s, uh, an interesting mix, wouldn’t you say?

Meanwhile, Perry, who has faced varying degrees of difficulty in holding his seat, encounters challenges from an increasing number of centrist and progressive voters in areas like Camp Hill and Lower Allen.

As November approaches, the actions of voters in Cumberland County and the Susquehanna Valley will be closely watched. Perry, a conservative legislator, is truly fighting for his political future amid a changing political landscape.
