Transit Worker Stabbed by Murder Suspect with Prior Offenses

A man suspected of murdering a transit employee outside a train station in broad daylight has a history of legal troubles. Chevazz Campbell, 37, is charged with the stabbing death of Julian Mobley, 41, who was a janitor for the Chicago Transit Authority and a family man. This tragic incident unfolded at the Damen Green Line station shortly before 3 p.m. on Thursday.

According to reports, the confrontation began when Campbell entered the station through the gate without paying. After a heated argument, he allegedly stabbed Mobley in the neck. Prior to the stabbing, Campbell purportedly sprayed Mobley with mace two times.

At the time of this violent encounter, Campbell was on electronic monitoring due to at least four violations related to his probation, specifically over curfew breaches.

Authorities said that hours after the incident, Campbell was arrested. Reports indicate that he also allegedly robbed Mobley during the attack. The Amalgamated Transit Union issued a statement expressing their grief, highlighting that Mobley was trying to intervene in an attack concerning a fare dispute when he lost his life. They honored him as a hero for his actions.

In response to the incident, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson stated that his administration is dedicated to ensuring the safety of commuters and employees within the transit system.

Campbell is now facing a series of serious charges, including first-degree murder, armed robbery, and possession of a weapon by a felon. The community is left reeling from this senseless act of violence, underscoring ongoing concerns about safety in public spaces.
