A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of southern Japan on Thursday, triggering a tsunami warning.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake had a magnitude of 7.1, was centered off the east coast of Kyushu in southern Japan, and had a depth of about 18.6 miles.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning, expecting waves of up to 3.3 feet along the southern Kyushu coast and near Shikoku.
Operators of nuclear power plants in Kyushu and Shikoku said they were checking for damage.
Japan’s NHK public television reported there were reports of broken windows at Miyazaki Airport, near the epicenter.

Japan is located on the Pacific Ocean’s Ring of Fire, an earthquake fault line that surrounds the Pacific Ocean, and is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries.
More than 240 people were killed when an earthquake struck Noto in north-central Japan on January 1st.
